Every year, several trees or their branches fell due to heavy winds and the Horticulture department used to write to the Forest department requesting their disposal. The civic body BBMP's forest wing is required to provide an estimate of the fallen wood's worth, based on which the Cubbon Park authorities will conduct the auction. But the Forest officials take about 11 months to provide an estimate due to "shortage of staff". In 2016 fresh thinking broke the pattern. Park authorities put out an announcement in the newspapers inviting artists to create pieces of art out of the fallen trees in Cubbon Park. After a 14-day wood carving workshop, the Horticulture department organised in partnership with the Karnataka Shilpakala Academy, 19 pieces of art were created out of fallen trees in Cubbon Park.
